Writing at Hawthorn
Writing is a vital part of our curriculum at Hawthorn Primary school. By the end of Year Six we aim to have developed a love of writing and for children to be able to creatively express their thoughts, ideas and wild imaginations through their written word. We also aim for children to be able to confidently identify and apply a range of spelling, grammar and punctuation. At Hawthorn Primary School, we encourage children to take pride in their learning and therefore teach a fluent, joined handwriting style.
"You can make anything by writing" - C.S Lewis.
In order to help us develop confident writers who can express themselves through their words, we have devised a bespoke writing and spelling curriculum. This curriculum is cross-curricular which provides the children opportunities to write for a range of purposes and audiences whilst also being engaging and facilitating chances to apply specific and higher order vocabulary from foundation subjects. All independent writes from children are marked according to our school moderation writing assessment checklists. This enables teachers to give quality-first teaching to specific areas of the curriculum and also drives the childrens' writing targets.

Children will make evident progress between their start point and end point in each specific genre of writing. By the end of Year Six, they will be writing accurately and be able to adapt their writing style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. Our pupils will be able to write using a wide range of vocabulary through a language rich environment. Most importantly, they will enjoy and identify with writing as a way of communicating thoughts, feelings and their imagination.
