Write a list of musical words on paper/card. Play snap using these words.

Rule: you have to be able to read the word to win!

Visit the Literacy Shed for this wonderful resource on Once in a Lifetime or your child can create an invitation for their family song performance.

Theme

What can I Hear? Ask your child to visit different places in the home and garden. Get them to list all of the different sounds that they can hear e.g. the humming

of the fridge. Which room is the noisiest? Encourage them to use words such as volume, tempo, pitch and beat. After this, ask your child to record the sounds

and play them to the family. Can the family guess where the sound is coming from? Alternatively, your child can replicate the sound and the family could guess

this way instead.

The Four Seasons- Vivaldi wrote The Four Seasons during the early Classical period. Divide a piece of paper into 4 and ask your child to draw each season in

each box as they listen to the music here. Discuss how each movement sounds different e.g. Spring is energetic and has a fast tempo.

  1. In a school kitchen, the cook has 20 pie trays. She makes meat pies and vegetarian pies. The cook uses 8 trays for the meat pies and 7 for the vegetarian pies. How many trays are not used?
  2. A teacher collects a bag of 28 balls for a PE lesson. There are 3 colours of ball. There are 13 blue balls and 8 green balls. How many red balls are there?
  3. A farmer has 26 cows, which he keeps in 3 fields. After counting 12 in the first field and 5 in the second, how many cows would he expect to find in the third?
  4. A photographer takes 34 photographs in a day. She takes 13 in the morning and 12 in the afternoon. She takes the rest of the photographs in the evening. How many photographs does she take in the evening?
  5. The children in Mrs Jones’ class earned some extra minutes of playtime. Normally, they have 15 minutes. Now they have 22 minutes. How many extra minutes did they earn?

Making More Music! - Can your child use different parts of their body to make music e.g. clicking fingers, stamping feet. After this, ask your child to design a new instrument. This could be an instrument that belongs to the woodwind or brass family. They can draw and label their design and then make it using materials from the recycling. Does it work? Ask your child to record 3 ways they could improve their design.

  3. A greengrocer has a box of apples. In the morning he sells 17 apples. In the afternoon he sells 6 apples. At the end of the day there are 11 apples left in the box. How many apples were there at the start of the day?
  4. In a tube of sweets, Kate finds 7 orange ones, 6 green ones and 3 yellow ones. How many sweets are there altogether?
  5. Lily’s mum has 28p in her purse. Lily has 11p. How much do they have altogether?

  3. Asif has a packet of biscuits. There are 12 in the packet. He gives 6 of the biscuits to some friends. He buys another packet of 12 biscuits. How many biscuits does he have now?
  4. Joe and Sam are playing a computer game. Joe scores 45 points and Sam scores 32 points. How many points do they score altogether?
  5. In the next round of the game, Joe scores 36 points and Sam scores 49 points. How many more points does Sam score than Joe?
