Year 1 Learning About Children's Rights...

Year 1 have been developing their understanding of the UNICEF Rights of the Child through a range of engaging discussions and activities. During their lesson, the children explored what rights are and learned that every child has rights to help them stay safe, healthy, happy and able to learn.

Pupils discussed important rights including Article 27, the right to a safe home and an adequate standard of living, Article 28, the right to education, Article 29, the right to develop their talents and abilities through education, and Article 31, the right to rest, play and leisure. Through questioning and class discussions, children considered what they need to feel safe and happy and explored why these rights are important for all children.

The children took part in activities where they identified real rights and discussed how everyone should be treated fairly and equally. They also explored how they can help others enjoy their rights by being kind, respectful and supportive friends. Through true or false quizzes, partner talk and class discussions, pupils demonstrated an excellent understanding that rights belong to every child.

The lesson also encouraged children to recognise that rights come with responsibilities. Pupils reflected on how they can respect the rights of others by showing kindness, helping their friends and creating a positive classroom environment where everyone feels valued, included and listened to.

By learning about children's rights from an early age, Year 1 are developing into respectful, responsible and caring members of the school community who understand the importance of ensuring that everyone's rights are protected.
