    Year 6 talked about helping the community and protecting wildlife and the environment. As a class, we thought it would be a good idea to start at school clearing up any litter, in particular in our forest school to protect wildlife. This linked in nicely with article 29 of children's rights respecting as seen above.

  • Rights respecting posters and work

    Year 6 looked further into rights respecting articles and had good discussion around if certain articles fit into basic needs, to keep you safe from harm or expressing themselves. This allowed the children to think more deeply about their own rights whilst respecting the views of their peers in class. Along with this work the children created their own Rights respecting posters in which some may be displayed around our school.

  • Rights respecting articles in year 6

    Year 6 discussed their rights specifically at school and how this relates to their own responsibilities and staff to uphold those rights. The class discussed the 54 articles and  then also completed a quiz around these to continue understanding  these rights.

  • Birmingham college University trip

    Year six had an amazing opportunity to visit Birmingham College University. Within the day, they got to experience what it would be like to study on campus. The class also experienced what it would be like to be taught in a lecture room. In addition to this, the children were able to take part in a hunt in the library looking at the fantastic range of books available to students on site. Finally, year six role-played a trial in one of the mock courtrooms in which a defendant was tried and found guilty of a crime. The class had a fantastic time and this allowed them to also understand where they could potentially go to study in the future, linking to our rights respecting article 28 ( right to education).

  • Rights respecting lesson.

    In our P.S.H.E lesson year 6 focussed on rights respecting, we discussed 

    children's rights and how they apply to real life scenarios. The class also took part in a rights respecting quiz to discuss each articles importance. Our rights respecting articles are also weaved in to the class curriculum so our children have a better understanding of their rights.

  • Sutton park

    .Upon the completion and hardwork from the children for SATS to celebrate we had a day at Sutton park where the children took part in many activities enjoyed the sunshine and had ice creams.Well done year 6 on your fantastic work and completing your SATS!! : ).

  • Happy Easter

    Year 6 have finished the spring term with lots of exciting learning and creativity! In writing, we explored The Highway man, stepping into the characters' shoes to write dramatic diary entries, and we also created spooky horror setting descriptions full of atmosphere and suspense. In maths, we have been building our confidence with fractions and percentages, becoming real problem-solving pros. A big thank you to everyone who took part in the Easter egg competition. Your entries were fantastic! We are looking forward to seeing you all in the summer term as we get ready for SATs and enjoy our final term at Hawthorn Primary School.

  • NSPCC Number Day 2026

    Within year 6 to celebrate NSPCC number day we firstly discussed who NSPCC are. We played multiplication and division games which the children really enjoyed testing and challenging their own understanding. Alongside this we also had a mathematical investigation in which year 6 had to solve this. Finally the class played some dice games to test their multiplication skills.

    Safer internet day 2026

    Year 6 took part in a BBC live lesson about safer internet day. The children learnt about AI (artificial intelligence). Within this interactive lesson, the children designed their own Chatbot(AI) and alongside this came up with their own set of rules that the Chatbot would adhere to.

  • History- World War 2

    Year 6 World War II Reenactment
    Step back in time with Year 6 as they bring history to life by recreating the tense atmosphere of an air raid shelter during the early days of World War II. Children will experience what it may have felt like to take cover as the nation prepared for conflict. The reenactment will also feature a powerful reading of Neville Chamberlain’s famous speech, declaring that Britain was at war with Germany in 1939. This immersive performance will give a real sense of the fear, uncertainty, and resilience shown by ordinary people during this pivotal moment in history.
