Year 6 Visit to Birmingham City University...
Year 6 enjoyed an inspiring and informative visit to Birmingham City University, where they were given the opportunity to explore the world of higher education and begin thinking about their future aspirations. Throughout the day, pupils learned about the different pathways available to them after secondary school and gained an insight into the wide range of courses and career opportunities that further and higher education can offer.
The children explored the university campus and discovered how a university operates on a day-to-day basis. They visited student accommodation, learning about where students can live while studying, and toured the university library, where they took part in an engaging treasure hunt activity. These experiences helped pupils develop a greater understanding of university life and encouraged them to think positively about their future educational journeys.
A highlight of the visit was taking part in a courtroom role-play activity. Pupils stepped into the roles of legal professionals and explored how the justice system operates. Through this interactive experience, children learned about the importance of evidence, fairness and decision-making within the legal process. They gained a deeper understanding of how laws help to protect individuals and communities and the role that courts play in ensuring justice is served.
This visit linked closely to Article 28, the right to education, by encouraging children to aspire to continued learning and future opportunities. It also supported Article 29, which states that education should help children develop their talents, abilities and personalities to their fullest potential. The courtroom experience further linked to Article 40, which recognises the rights of children within the justice system and helped pupils understand the importance of fairness, responsibility and the rule of law.
The visit was a valuable and memorable experience that broadened pupils' horizons, raised aspirations and helped them understand the many opportunities available to them as they continue their educational journey.
