Rights Through Literacy in Year 5...

Year 5 regularly embed children's rights within their English lessons, using high-quality texts as a stimulus for discussion, writing and reflection. Through their class text, The Last Bear, pupils explored important themes including friendship, survival, environmental responsibility and the impact that human actions can have on the natural world.

The children discussed the events and messages within the story, linking their learning to Article 31, the right to rest, play and participate in cultural activities, while also considering wider issues affecting people, animals and the environment. Through reading, comprehension and writing activities, pupils were encouraged to think critically about the world around them and express their own ideas and opinions.

Rights are also woven into grammar and writing lessons, where pupils are given opportunities to develop their communication skills, share their viewpoints and achieve their full potential. This supports Article 28, the right to education, and Article 29, the right to an education that develops children's personalities, talents and abilities.
