Year 5: Bringing Children’s Rights to Life Through Everyday Learning...

Year 5 demonstrate how children’s rights are embedded across the curriculum and revisited regularly through meaningful, real-life learning. Rights are not taught as a one-off lesson; they are woven into weekly teaching, discussions, written work and pupil reflections.

In PSHE, children explored the importance of rights and responsibilities within an online community. They discussed how to stay safe, follow rules and identify when online behaviour may be helpful or unhelpful. This linked closely to Article 13, the right to share thoughts freely, Article 17, the right to access information safely, and British Values such as the rule of law and mutual respect.

The children also explored important health and wellbeing topics, including the dangers of alcohol, screen time and body image. Through class discussions, videos, group work and written reflections, pupils developed their understanding of how to keep their bodies and minds healthy. These lessons linked strongly to Article 24, the right to health, and Article 31, the right to relax and play.

Year 5 also reflected on respecting themselves and others, celebrating that everyone is unique and that all bodies are different. This supported children’s understanding of Article 2, the right to be treated fairly and without discrimination.

Through these carefully planned links, Year 5 show that children’s rights are embedded throughout everyday learning, helping pupils to become safe, respectful, informed and responsible members of the school community.
