Reception Learns About Rights
The children in Reception have been learning about the Rights of the Child and exploring what every child needs to be happy, healthy and safe. As part of their learning, they completed a sorting challenge where they worked with a talk partner to discuss whether different items and experiences were rights or wants. For example, they identified that having a home is a right, whereas having sweets every day is not.
The children showed excellent speaking and listening skills as they shared their ideas, explained their thinking and respectfully listened to the opinions of others. They demonstrated a growing understanding of children's rights and why these rights are important for all children around the world.
In literacy, the children then wrote about their rights, using their fantastic phonics knowledge to sound out and spell unfamiliar words independently. We were incredibly impressed with their enthusiasm, thoughtful discussions and the quality of their writing, which reflected both their understanding of rights and their developing literacy skills.
