Mathematics

Here at Hawthorn Primary School, we are passionate about Mathematics and believe that it is a key skill that enables us to make sense of the world around us. It enables children to understand relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to understand and apply their knowledge to solve real life problems.

At Hawthorn, we feel it is important to use a Maths curriculum of depth as opposed to breadth (children being accelerated through to new content too early). This means misconceptions can be addressed allowing the working memory to be used repetitively, information is then stored in child’s long-term schemer and can be recalled upon when needed. Children can also build a deep understanding of concepts, as a result they can apply their skills fluently and flexibly by being challenged to solve increasingly complex problems before tackling new content. Children will achieve this by using mathematical equipment, concrete resources, and pictorial representations.

Also, there is more focus on mathematical reasoning where children follow a line of enquiry, find proof, and use mathematical vocabulary to communicate their thinking. This way, children will be more secure and more confident with mathematics as they move to KS3.

Mathematics equips children with a uniquely powerful set of tools. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries, and its importance is universally recognised
